Amsterdam North provides ample opportunities for regeneration, especially on the banks of the IJ. The Micro Masterplan tackles one such area, creating a fresh new municipal ambience that promotes communal integration and interactive relations between residential and office life on a shared site. Recent initiatives in this neighborhood have repeatedly resulted in solitary vertical structures. Sealed off with fences, these buildings have fragmented the local community. The Micro Masterplan attempts to resolve this problem by incorporating an urban wall with windows and walk ways that promote urban porosity while maintaining individual privacy. While the external skin of the complex displays uniformity, the internal living space represents the diversity articulated in the various individual characters of the complex buildings. The inner courtyard further enhances the standard of living, while by precisely positioning the living blocks, daylight and viewpoints enhance the intrinsic formation. Overall, this design takes on a campus-like character stimulating micro-urbanism and encouraging public interaction throughout the complex.
