program: office & retail
client: Boelens and De Gruyter
design: allard architecture
Allard Architecture created a new retail and office building in Amsterdam’s historic shipbuilding quarter. The link between industry and water was the first inspiration.
The clients requested to focus on a company from the creative industries: fashion, media, television or advertising, as well as the immediate surroundings. These factors influenced the resulting design of a series of stepped “vases” each with a clear view and connection to the water.
In addition, a number of sustainable technologies are implemented, such as a photoluminescent concrete façade and a reduced amount of glazing on the south and west facades which get direct sun.
