project type: residential
designer: allard architecture
Aquarius is an architectural initiative by allard architecture, designed with the intent to repurpose a small property in the Amsterdam Jordaan area. Currently in use as a storage and workroom for the adjacent fish shop, Allard Architecture proposes a vertical addition realised as a home within the upper levels, while maintaining the needs of the existing storage and workshop on ground level.
Drawing on inspiration from the adjacent fish shop, the Aquarius concept is based on the arabesque motion of air bubbles rising to the surface in a fish bowl. This joyful notion is achieved through the intelligent stacking and arranging of windows on the street façade. Each element of the building plays an important role in connecting the new addition to Amsterdam’s monumental significance.
Due to the compact nature of the site with a ground plot area of approximately 5 x 4 meters and maximum height of 13m, the construction process is required off-site using a prefabricated system of proposed steel or timber.
